Plains was originally founded as Horse Plains and sometimes called Wild Horse Plains as the local Native Americans would winter their horses here to feed on the valley's grasses each season. Outdoor recreation opportunities include hiking and golf, and with the Clark Fork River winding gracefully through lush terrain, visitors can find ample fishing, kayaking and rafting.
